Conquering an Ultra-Short-Tail Keyword in Two Weeks — 49,500 Volume GOTCHA!!!

After Google’s 2 November 2023 algorithm release — the “November 2023 Broad Core Update”
As usual, Google stays mysterious and doesn’t publish the algorithm details — SEO pros are used to that. We’re also used to another “old friend”: every major update, many sites crash for no clear reason — or surge (a lucky few). This SEO case study is our first ranking project after the 2 November update. The target keyword was 「內衣」(lingerie/underwear) — an ultra-short-tail beast with ~49,500 monthly searches globally. Surprisingly, rankings jumped from #54 into the top 10 in two weeks, with more upside left. Did the new algorithm requirements simply match our SEO & backlinks approach?
The shorter the tail, the harder the keyword. We usually start with long-tail terms, then surround short-tail ones so Google indexes them more easily. Short-tail work usually takes longer — historically six months or more before a realistic shot at the top 10.
In the past month we added 240+ Traditional Chinese backlinks from our own servers. Because those properties already carry strong activity signals (ongoing content & new links), results showed up fast — rankings rose and clicks grew by ~800/month. The November update almost certainly played a role.
Per Google Ads estimates, CPC for 內衣 is about HK$11.53. At 800 clicks, SEO delivered keyword-ad-equivalent (or better) results while saving ~HK$9,224 in ad spend per month.
Backlink sites are still websites — on-page SEO still applies. Because our backlink network already has quality built up, effects appear faster.
Traditional Chinese backlinks from a Hong Kong company target Chinese-language sites and the local market more precisely.
We keep ratios around 8 follow : 2 nofollow (or 9:1), with dofollow making up the majority.
